Shapes and patterns
Cartomancy occupies a very peculiar place in the Chinese culture, defining a non-linear time structure and identifying signs, symbols and occasional events with short circuits of magnetic forces, capable to predict the future and investigate the present.
Basic geometric shapes, on their own or composed, construct a thick web of signals, with stratified and complex symbolic meanings.
Meng Qingnan practice is based onto an empiric model of abstraction, on the edge between study of archaic meanings of geometric shapes, and the mathematical representation systems typical of Optical Art.
After analysing attentively their superficial features, the artist submits his subjects to a test, from which he extracts a personal profile. He meets his interlocutors through a functional code to frame passions and weaknesses, the hidden characters of their personas.
On the route back to the painted canvas, the artist follows the crucial tension between surface and depth, merging it with a mathematical grid of colours.
