Lieven d'Haese Belgian, b. 1957
An old childhood dream. A journey to the rhythms of Africa…
Born in 1957 in Moanda, Congo, Lieven d'Haese is a Belgian sculptor from a renowned family of artists.
His bronzes tell stories: ageless men and children, often looking up to the sky, who travel, dream and play, accompanied by animals, boats or racing cars. They carry the rhythms and faces of the Africa of his childhood, and a universal tenderness.
Each cast is reworked by hand by the artist, from the wax to the patina, which he applies himself.
Represented by Art Thema for nearly fifteen years, Lieven d'Haese creates poetic, deeply human work that reveals itself to those who take the time to look.

Wide Exhibitions in Europe
Lieven d'Haese grew up in a family where creating came naturally. His father, Walter d'Haese, made the large horse at the Hermann-Debroux metro station in Brussels. The family also includes Reinhoud, a key figure of the Cobra movement, the sculptor Roel d'Haese, as well as musicians and writers.
After a childhood in Congo, he studied painting and graphic arts at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Brussels and Ghent, then at the art school in Aalst. It was at Roland Monteyne's foundry that he fulfilled a lifelong dream: casting his own sculptures in bronze.
His training as a graphic artist still shows in his work. He plays with light and shadow, mass and void, with the precision of a draughtsman. His finely rendered drapery and his patinas give each piece its own vibration.
His figures carry hope, fragility and a quiet confidence in the future. Their gaze lifted towards the sky has become his signature. Around them unfolds a whole world of adventures and childhood dreams: horses, giraffes, hippos, birds, boats, racing cars…
His sculpture "King of Kingabwa", two metres long, was acquired by the municipality of Kruibeke, Belgium. His works have been exhibited in Brussels, Antwerp, Knokke, Ghent, Kortrijk, Aalst, Leuven, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Lille, Strasbourg, Beaune, Aix-en-Provence, Luxembourg and London, and are held in many private collections.
