"Urban art is graffiti, fresco, collage. It’s a cry of joy, a cry of life"
Olivier Rizzo is only fourteen when he already feels that his path will be in Art. He attends the courses at the "Rue Madame" School from 1975 to 1980, making the most of his free time to paint, while also designing and creating theater sets for five years. When he graduates from the Estienne School of Art in Paris in 1983, he is twenty-two years old. It is during this time that he creates his first stencils on the street with the X Moulinex group and begins to paint under the name Speedy Graphito.

Speedy Graphito is now a "historical" artist, a monument of his generation. Emerging from the narrative figuration movement of the 1980s, he has long been recognized as one of the pioneers of contemporary urban art and contemporary art in general. His career, numerous museum exhibitions, and public commissions have established him as "a great," an essential artist. Despite this status as a major artist, despite numerous record prices at auction, and despite his ubiquitous presence in museums, he has retained the instincts and habits of a pioneering artist: his creativity is intact and still incredible and surprising. Speedy continues to imagine, dare, and innovate. It is in his DNA.
He recently completed a year-long exhibition that was an incredible success at the Musée en Herbe in Paris. For 2024, after a solo show at Polaris, he will exhibit from September to the end of December at the world's first floating urban art center, Fluctuart, under the curation of the ART FIVE Gallery.
Let’s go back to the origins of his career: when he graduated from the Estienne School of Art in Paris in 1983, he was twenty-two years old. It was during this time that he created his first stencils on the street with the X Moulinex group and began painting under the pseudonym Speedy Graphito. Since the early 1980s, Speedy Graphito has permeated the collective memory and the walls of Paris, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, enhancing them with his striking graphics and murals. He uses all forms of expression—painting, sculpture, installation, photography, or video—to create a universal language through his work over the years.
His trademark is that of intelligent, joyful, and profound art, nourished by vibrant colors. Speedy playfully and ironically shakes up our systems of perception. In his approach, he does not hesitate to appropriate and subvert all imagery from popular culture, as he did in the early 2000s with superheroes and brands. In doing so, he performs an almost systematic decoding of our collective unconscious, questioning the norms and dictates of our Western cultural identity, layering a more poetic dimension onto the reality of our society.
When Speedy Graphito uses a personal imaginary dictionary, it is always, and in a tangible way, connected to the history of Art. Themes of childhood and death, long present, give his works a character that is often autobiographical, inspired by his wanderings and inner journeys. All of them are an invitation to travel and awakening. The body of work, as a whole, is that of a mediator, marked by the dreamlike imprint of a true iconoclast.
Equally comfortable in public painting performances as in the intimacy of his studio, Speedy Graphito dedicates himself body and soul to his passion, in the urgency of time passing. He is one of those artists who has marked and will continue to mark the history of art
